  • What is a Hydrophone?

    A hydrophone, also known as an underwater acoustic transducer, is a device that converts acoustic signals into electrical signals. It is an acoustic instrument used to receive underwater sound waves.

    The piezoelectric hydrophone is one of the most widely used types of hydrophones. When the internal piezoelectric material of the hydrophone is subjected to force, electric charges are generated on its surface; this phenomenon is known as the piezoelectric effect.

    The sensitive element inside a piezoelectric hydrophone adopts high-performance piezoelectric ceramic material, and the exterior is encapsulated with polyurethane. After polarization, piezoelectric ceramics exhibit excellent piezoelectric properties, with high output power and high sensitivity. They are also robust and easy to process, and can be fabricated into sheets, cylinders, spheres, and other shapes.

    Piezoelectric hydrophones feature ultra-low noise and high sensitivity, and can be used in marine environmental monitoring, marine resource development, underwater navigation and communication, underwater target localization, national defense and military industry, and other fields.


  • What are the common types of hydrophones?

    Common types of hydrophones mainly include the following:

    Classified by sensor material, they can be divided into piezoelectric hydrophones and fiber-optic hydrophones.

    Classified by directivity, they can be divided into scalar hydrophones (omnidirectional) and vector hydrophones (directional).

    Classified by sensor combination, they can be divided into single hydrophones and hydrophone arrays.


  • How to select a hydrophone?

    • A single scalar hydrophone is mainly used for ambient noise monitoring, underwater acoustic channel evaluation, target noise spectrum analysis, etc.
    • A single vector hydrophone is mainly used for short-range target bearing estimation, target bearing tracking, etc.
    • Hydrophone arrays are mainly used for long-range target bearing estimation, target bearing tracking, etc.
    • Multiple arrays are mainly used for long-range target localization.


  • What are the advantages of digital hydrophones?

    1. Traditional standard hydrophones output analog electrical signals. Their output terminals usually need to be connected to a series of instruments such as amplifiers, filters and signal acquisition units to extract and store audio signals. During measurement, external interference must be minimized to avoid negative impacts on results. For new users, the operating conditions are relatively complex and less user-friendly.

    2. Our digital hydrophones not only retain the compact and delicate size of standard hydrophones, but also integrate pre-amplification, high-order filtering and signal acquisition functions. The output is a direct digital signal, and audio data can be read and stored in the required format via a single network cable connected to a computer.
    Thanks to high integration, users do not need to master complicated equipment in the laboratory; for field trials, only the digital hydrophone is required, without carrying heavy and redundant instruments.
